課程概述

Description

This course is a continuation of the survey of European literature from 1350 to the Modern period. The first semester ends at the threshold of the Enlightenment. The second semester takes off with an overview of the Romantic response to the Enlightenment, beginning in between the two with Goethe and continuing into Continental Romantic lyric. This culminates in Baudelaire and the subsequent Symbolist tradition. Finally, Modernist prose works by Proust, Mann, and Kafka are studied in their relationship both to nineteenth century traditions (Romanticism, realism and naturalism, decadence and Symbolism and so forth) and to the changed world of technologized, urban Modernity.

Grading:
Class attendance 10 %; Goethe exam 30%, Midterm exam 30%, Final Exam 30%
